Renowned Chinese business mogul Mr. Yuan Moifu, a prominent figure in the neurology surgery equipment manufacturing industry in China, recently undertook an extraordinary journey from Guangzhou, China, to Nepal.
As a passionate car enthusiast and adventurer, Mr. Yuan drove 14,000 km, starting from China through Tibet, ultimately reaching Kathmandu, Nepal, in his brand-new Yangwang U8. This high-end luxury SUV belongs to BYD Yangwang, the premium sub-brand of BYD.
The Yangwang U8 is an AWD Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), featuring an Internal Combustion Engine that acts as a power generator for the battery without directly driving the wheels. Equipped with an LFP Blade battery with a capacity of 49.05 kWh, the U8 provides a range of 180 km. With a full battery and a 75-liter tank, it can cover up to 1000 km without needing to refuel.
Powering the U8 are four electric motors, each producing 220 kW, resulting in a combined output of 880 kW (1,180 hp) and a peak torque of 1,280 Nm. The vehicle's dimensions are 5319 mm in length, 2050 mm in width, and 1930 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3050 mm. It rides on an e4 platform and features a Disus-P hydraulic body control system, allowing for a ground clearance adjustment of up to 150 mm.
We had the exclusive opportunity to speak with Mr. Yuan Moifu to delve deeper into his adventurous journey. Here are some highlights from our conversation.
What motivated your travels from China to Nepal?
I initially departed from China with my wife for a journey to Tibet. As my understanding of Buddhism grew, I felt compelled to explore Nepal further to deepen my connection with the religion's roots.
How did the journey in Nepal challenge the Yangwang U8?
The true test drive of the Yangwang U8 began upon entering Nepal, where the diverse and adventurous terrain posed significant challenges. The demanding roads thoroughly examined the car's capabilities.
What do you think about BYD as a brand?
I have a high regard for BYD as a brand, given its strong reputation and significant presence in China. Previously, my preference for luxury vehicles led me to rely on foreign brands because there weren't any Chinese options offering a luxury SUV collection. However, my perspective changed when BYD introduced the Yangwang high-end luxury brand and launched the Yangwang U8. I was impressed by its advanced features and technological innovations.
BYD effectively filled a market void by offering a technologically sophisticated and feature-packed luxury Chinese SUV. This influenced my decision to opt for the Yangwang U8 due to its blend of luxury and state-of-the-art technology.
What are your thoughts on BYD's position in the Nepali market?
BYD has established a robust presence in Nepal through its authorized distributor, Cimex Inc. While the high-end BYD Yangwang U8 has not yet been introduced in Nepal, Cimex offers a selection of suitable models such as the BYD Dolphin, BYD Atto3, and BYD Seal. These vehicles showcase BYD's innovative e-platform 3.0 and the blade battery, renowned for its safety features including nail penetration testing. With these offerings, BYD is poised to expand its local footprint and elevate its brand recognition in Nepal.
What message do you have for BYD Nepal, and how would you describe your experience?
BYD Nepal holds great potential for substantial business growth. The local team has the opportunity to solidify the brand and elevate it to new heights. My experience in Nepal has been wonderful—the hospitality of the people, the breathtaking culture and landscapes, and despite some traffic challenges, I am thoroughly impressed with this neighbouring country. I look forward to visiting Nepal again in the future.
